Create an Open NYC Landlord and Property Management Database

First, create a list in excel as follows:

Company Name, Company Phone Number, Company Website

Listing all of the property management companies in NYC. This alone will be useful.

Next, create a list of buildings with their corresponding management companies:

Street Address of Building, Management Co /Landlord Name

The current process of finding an apartment in NYC is horrible. With these two open databases (which could live as sort of a wiki or Google Doc), tenants could circumvent a lot of the spam that currently pollutes Craigslist.

If someone can put together the databases in Excel or Google docs as described above, I would be happy to make these easily searchable and accessible as a full website.

  • There are plenty of websites that have tried to aggregate this data. For example www.urbansherpany.com which specializes in no fee rentals. Furthermore some management companies strictly deal with brokers because the fee charged by the broker is split multiple ways.

I think the route you're trying to go is www.urbansherpany.com? If you want to start something along these lines you cannot find one person to give you an excel sheet. Its silly.

Start a service or an updatable page where visitors can submit information about buildings and management based on their location. For example visitors from UES can submit buildings in their specific neighborhood (UES) and so on. Good luck!

  • Sometimes landlord/mgmt co require the use of a broker, so that might be help to note as well.

I would also want to know current and historical rents in the building.

StreetEasy.com has some of this data.

  • I'd suggest making it fun to enter and edit new database records ... and easy to combine any duplicates. That way you might start a community of helpful and motivated data managers (ala wikipedia). Are you looking to add ways for users to leave feedback?

This looks like a good start: http://www.nybits.com/managers/residential_property_managers.html
