Design the ultimate iPhone App for Entrepreneurs

Posted by Angelsoft

Being a successful entrepreneur is hard work, but as Apple says, “There’s an app for that!”...well, there isn’t, but we think there should be!

With the explosive popularity of the iPhone and mobile applications, we’re challenging all hardworking entrepreneurs to put on their thinking caps and come up with the ideal mobile companion for the in-the-trenches, wildly-innovative, 24/7/365-working, under-funded new venturer...with particular attention to helping yourself get funded.

This challenge is to design the perfect iPhone application for the entrepreneur on the go, taking full advantage of the iPhone platform, the information and active data resources available in the world of Web 2.0, and, of course, the tools, content and connectivity provided by the Angelsoft platform (www.angelsoft.net).

Potential components might be things like: an interface to immediately send your contact info and business plan to a venture capitalist you meet at a conference, a camera interface to tie a VC’s face to her business card, an integrated way to show your PowerPoint slides during your elevator pitch, integrated ways to show product videos, up-to-the-minute stats on your web site from Compete and/or Alexa, prospect lists drawn from Salesforce.com, some type of Twitter/Yammer integration to coordinate with your team, a live data feed on what angel groups are actually doing with your funding application (from Angelsoft, obviously), quick and diry term-sheet generator, API integration to places like Crunchbase, etc.

As always with an app, and especially a mobile app, simplicity, power, and ease of use are paramount. In this case, the app also has to be viable, with all features capable of being provided either through realistic original programming, or by using existing APIs from other platforms (for this challenge, assume that an API will be available to deliver anything you need from the Angelsoft platform). The more your solution focuses on providing an elegant interface to existing, mashup-able APIs, the better.

We are issuing this challenge because as the market leader in the early-stage financing industry, Angelsoft provides the tools that are used by over 17,000 accredited investors in 45 countries to process over 3,500 business plans each month, and investors would be out of business without great entrepreneurs!

  • Hi David,
Could you tell us if you're going to award the prize for this contest and the business plan contest? I'm really eager to see who won.

    Thanks!

  • Hi David,

I'm not sure if my submission got through. It'd be great if I could get a confirmation from your side.

    Thanks,

    Bibhas

    Question from A A 9 months, 1 week ago

    • Hi Bibhas! Well, I got a note from the system telling me that there was a submission, but I also see a note that says "When the deadline has passed, you will be able to view the solutions and indicate your decision(s)." So I *think* that it arrived, but I'm not allowed to see it until after the deadline. If for some reason it then doesn't appear, I'll be in touch with you to resend it (and will make sure that it counts). Thanks for responding to the challenge!

  • Hi Dave, do you mind if we submit hand drawn wireframes, or do they have to be more professional than that? In addition to the hand drawn wireframes, I would submit a detailed document with an explanation of the app's functionality. Happy Thanksgiving!

Question from K Divvela 9 months, 1 week ago

    • K, hand drawn wireframes are fine, provided they are detailed and clearly show what you have in mind. But since there are several easily available template packages for this (such as http://www.teehanlax.com/blog/2008/08/19/iphone-gui-psd/ or http://graffletopia.com/stencils/358 or http://www.fullofdesign.ca/posts/iphone-app-wireframe-template) you might want to try one of them since it could make your job a lot easier. (And if you still want to do it by hand, check out this really nifty iPhone UI stencil! http://www.uistencils.com/iphone-stencil-kit.html or this iPhone app design sketchbook: http://appsketchbook.com/) -David

  • Is there any way to post solutions to AngelSoft and not in public here?

Question from K Divvela 10 months, 1 week ago

    • Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes! We've changed the options for this challenges so that responses can be private and not publicly visibile. We look forward to seeing your solution! -David S. Rose, Angesoft
