Genotyping the Astronauts

Posted by Esther Dyson

One  challenge for current medical research, and especially genetic research, is that most people with extensive health records are sick or in some way unhealthy.  We know much more about the sick than about the healthy, let alone the super-healthy.  Therefore, I'd like to see both RosKosmos (the Russian Space Agency) and NASA invite all their astronauts and cosmonauts (current and former)  to be genotyped.  These people are uniquely healthy.  They are a small group, but with luck - and permission - their data could be very important as part of broader studies comparing sick and healthy people and their corresponding genotypes.
