Repertoire Wiki for Singers

Posted by Julie Baron

As a classical singer, I'm often asked to sing for specific occasions - weddings, funerals, birthday parties, anniversary events, etc. and I'm sometimes at a loss for a variety of options to offer the event host.  Language requirements are occasionally given or secular versus non-secular specified; classical versus contemporary has also come up.  While there are aria and art song sites that list texts, vocal ranges and other pertinent details, they are not often separated by useful categories or tagged in any way.

My challenge would be for someone to create a sort of Wiki repository where fellow singers could enter repertoire suggestions that are appropriate for specific occasions, languages, moods, events and venues, among other things.  Song titles and other data could be input and then tagged, and the database could be searchable by criteria the end user requests to be returned.  This would be tremendously helpful to all classical singers and the people who hire them, perhaps opening up a world for occasional music beyond the typically chosen pieces.  Living composers could also submit their works for review, giving them greater exposure in the industry.

  • Hi Julie, You've posted so many great ideas here on ChallengePost! I'm curious about what exactly you'd be looking for in terms of a deliverable for this challenge; site specifications and tools that could be used? A prototype? A fully functional site? Any information you can provide about the solution you're looking for would be helpful. Thanks! Sara

    • Hi Sara! Thanks very much for your question, and for your kind thoughts. I guess I was thinking of sort of a hybrid between site specs and a more of fully functional site. I have a pretty good idea of what might be helpful to singers in terms of content and categorization, but the navigation stumps me. I visualize a site where all singers could freely enter suggestions of songs for specific events or under specific categories (for example, funeral of a relative, wedding of a sister, german arias for mezzo-soprano, english song of celebration, italian serenade, etc.), but the possible categories could be endless, so I'm not sure how the navigation would best be tackled. I believe that's the hardest part, as the content would be user-generated. Would it be tags? Sub-pages? I don't really know. Also, would the recommendations be policed in any way? Some sort of review of the recommendation? And what is the money-making potential for the solver - referral fees for links to sheet music or CD sites? I think there's great potential here for both benefit to the community and a possible lucrative effort for the solver, but the navigation needs to be easy to use and not unruly. Not sure if that helps at all - please feel free to follow up with additional questions. Thanks so much for looking!
