GeoCities has finally been shut down by Yahoo (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2009/10/geocities-closing.html).
Despite its inability ability to evolve with the web, GeoCities was one of the first sites to show us the power of enabling the creativity of millions of people. Oh, and the power of animated gifs.
So let's have a fitting limerick to remember it by.
It must actually be a limerick and follow all the criteria listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerick_(poetry)
Once there was a site called geocity, that became the darling of the internet despite looking shitty. Alas, along came web 2.0 which sang a different tune and now we enjoy sites such as bit.ly.
there once was a city named geo
that attracted the old and the neo
a web page for free
taught its people to be
limitlessly imaginatevo

There once was a site by Yahoo
Bought with stock up the wazoo
It attracted a mass
But revenue was ass
So rest in peace 'cities of Geo.
Just ten years after it was born
Yahoo left Geocities torn
They took free webspace
and sell it at thier pace
And all we can do is mourn
Remember the cities online
At first sight they were so fine
Space age light and sound
Collapsed to the ground
Alas is no one left to pine
Hehe This is fun. Now I kinda wonder if I can
spend a day talking in lemricks
Just ten years after it was born
Yahoo left Geocities torn
They took free webspace
and sell it at thier pace
And all we can do is mourn
Remember the cities online
At first sight they were so fine
Space age light and sound
Collapsed to the ground
Alas is no one left to pine
There once was a place on the Net,
Where building a page was no sweat.
With blinking GIF whores
and MIDIs galore,
GeoCities, we'll never forget.
Yahoo Geocites taught us to be Engaging and innovative
And then when we learned it all, they left us!
We were too busy in our social media to bid bye to them,
But they will always remain in hearts of everyone who learned their first words between those two blue < and >.
I can't betray my first teacher. I love you and will miss you always. :sob
